An Introduction to Archaeobotany:

field and laboratory practices

This workshop will provide basic theoretical and practical training in Archaeobotany, taking advantage of ongoing archaeological excavations in Idanha-a-Velha. It will focus on the different stages and methods of studying wood (anthracology), fruits and seeds (carpology) recovered in dry environments, from the collection and processing of sedimentary samples in excavation, to the laboratory analysis and interpretation of data in the light of the context (stratigraphic and historical) where they were collected.
During this workshop, trainees will be introduced to the main types of plant remains recovered in dry archaeological sites in Portugal and will have contact with the equipment and techniques necessary for their study. They will also learn the concepts and theoretical framework essential to the interpretation of archaeobotanical assemblages, having the opportunity to discuss different case studies. After this workshop it is expected that the trainees will be able to establish a sampling strategy and implement it in the context of excavation, process sediments by manual flotation and with a flotation machine and accommodate samples properly.
This workshop is the result of a collaboration between the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies (CEIS20), of the University of Coimbra and the Research Center in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources (CIBIO), of the University of Porto and takes place within the scope of projects IGAEDIS (PTDC/HAR-ARQ/6273/2020) and B-ROMAN (PTDC/HAR-ARQ/4909/2020).

Duration: Two days (12 hours). Dates: 9th and 10th July 2022. Audience: University students and researchers [students enrolled in the excavation + 5 external enrolments], Location Idanha-a-Velha
